Assistant Director, Project Management Office (#00878) 

Information Technology Services (ITS) at Old Dominion University is seeking a full-time employee to serve as the Assistant Director, Project Management and manager of the Project Management Office (PMO). The PMO manager will develop an IT project management framework, lead the Project Management Office, coordinate project governance, participate in special projects to help Old Dominion University and Information Technology Services more effectively accomplish its goals and priorities, and serve as an Assistant Director in the management team.


Required qualifications include:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of project management practices, techniques and tools.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of system development life cycle.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of IT related business flow principles.
  • Considerable knowledge of industry trends and marketplace best practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of organization management and operating principles and practices.
  • Proficient skill utilizing various technology-related tools for project management, software development, web services, security services, network services and architecture, workflow technology, data repository services, server technology, desktop technology, file services, directory services, and technology support.
  • Excellent skill leading a team through the development and implementation of cogent project planning methodologies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills capable of tracking, managing, and resolving issues on multiple project simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with broad-based constituencies and the highest levels of executive management.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and manage project execution in an organized and disciplined manner.
  • Excellent ability to work independently and guide the work of others.
  • Excellent ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply a variety of policies/guidelines.
  • Excellent ability to work with customers to understand process flow from their perspective, define requirements and set expectations.


Required certification: Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent project related certification


Preferred qualifications include:

  • Certified Program Management Professional (PgMP) or Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP)
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, such as learning unfamiliar processes and using methodologies in new situations.
  • Extensive experience coordinating IT solutions to resolve business issues while managing costs and risks
  • Considerable experience managing small and large projects
  • Considerable experience managing projects in a higher education IT environment
  • Considerable organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or related discipline; equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
