Corporate Communications Manager, Reputational Risk

The Reputation Risk Manager will play a key role in supporting the broader agenda of the Capital One Public Affairs team, assisting in managing reputational risk, company issues and crisis events. As a Risk Manager, you will support the development of reputation risk frameworks and help drive initiatives across the enterprise to protect and enhance the bank’s reputation. Specifically, you will apply your analytical, research, and project management skills to help identify and assess potential reputation risks, plan engagement with key external constituents (including media), and influence business practices and strategy. The Manager will support Public Affairs and the larger Corporate Communications team in creating analytically-based solutions to drive a disciplined yet efficient reputation risk culture for Capital One.

As a member of the Public Affairs team, the candidate will have the opportunity to take on expanding responsibilities quickly, gain exposure to business lines and deepen his/her understanding of effective public affairs and reputation risk management programs. The successful candidate will assist with developing strategies and managing initiatives in accordance with the company’s Reputation Risk Policy and framework.

Specific responsibilities will include:

+ Serving as both an effective challenger and a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders

+ Conduct research and media monitoring to determine industry best practices related to financial services and technology

+ Synthesize external and internal viewpoints to support reputation risk assessments

+ Develop and maintain documentation and message points on key issues to ensure information is current and centralized

+ Review and respond to requests for company information to ensure accuracy and appropriateness

+ Identify opportunities and work with partners across Lines of Business and Corporate Staff groups to assess potential reputation risk issues and develop mitigation plans

+ Develop an understanding of the enterprise reputation risk policy and participate in annual review process of protocols

Candidate Qualities:

+ Ability to independently and proactively identify and evaluate key reputation risks and controls relative to business strategy, products and/or processes

+ Strong strategic and integrative thinking skills

+ Good judgement and the ability to drive agreement through intellect, interpersonal and negotiation skills

+ Strong executive communication skills: impeccable written and oral communication credentials,

+ A proven track record of decision making and problem solving based on analytics. Conceptual thinking skills must be complemented by a strong quantitative orientation

+ Proven experience in building relationships with stakeholders, to include senior management

+ Knowledge of financial services and digital/tech sectors

+ Ability to exercise strong judgment within narrow time-frames

+ Strong team player with good critical thinking, organization and planning skills

Basic Qualifications:

+ Bachelor’s Degree or military experience

+ At least 4 years of public relations or public affairs experience

+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Master’s Degree in Communications or related field, Public Administration (MPA) or Business Administration (MBA)

+ 6+ years of communications, public relations experience

+ 2+ years of risk management experience

+ 2+ years of experience in quantitative analysis OR project management

+ At least 1 year of experience building new processes or governance

+ At least 2 years of experience with leading cross-functional teams (setting direction of team and managing expectations)
