Job Description Summary

The Counselor provides sound educational, career, and personal counseling for prospective, current, and returning students. The responsibilities include the participation in the planning and implementation of retention efforts promoting student success.

  1. Counsel prospective, current, and returning students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds concerning their individual goals by utilizing professional counseling techniques and providing intervention to enhance student success.
  2. Interpret English, mathematics, and English as a Second Language (ESL) placement test scores and other multiple indicators to assess student’s readiness for college level courses and determine appropriate course selection.
  3. Advise incoming transfer students by reviewing their transcripts from previous institutions using the Transfer Evaluation System and by interpreting scores from CLEP, Advanced Placement, and other standardized tests.
  4. Counsel students who have requested re-admission, and assist them in developing appropriate educational goals, time management plans, decision making skills etc. that will assist them in achieving academic success.
  5. Counsel students in career development with the use of self-assessment inventories and occupational resources, teaching them decision-making skills to assist them in selecting a curriculum.
  6. Counsel students with personal issues that may hinder their academic progress to encourage student growth and development; refer students when appropriate to community agencies and other college resources (such as Career Services, Center for Military and Veterans Education, Educational Accessibility Services, Personal Counselors, and Women’s Center).
  7. Advise students on the requirements for transferring to four-year colleges and universities to ensure compliance with the transfer requirements of senior institutions by providing information on course equivalencies, articulation agreements, guaranteed admission agreements, departmental requirements, and access to online resources.
  8. Thoroughly understand the college’s academic programs, courses and support services, and be able to consistently and accurately communicate that information to students and the public.
  9. Plan and facilitate group advising sessions, workshops, and information sessions for students relating to student development and success. This includes participation in various early intervention and retention programs.
  10. Establish and nurture collaborative and effective relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure and promote student success; hold consultations regarding student performance and curriculum concerns to improve student retention and academic success through the different methods of communication and committee involvement.
  11. Continue to be knowledgeable of national best practices that enhance job performance and improve delivery of services. Acquire current knowledge and ideas that enhance job performance and improve delivery of services by attending staff meetings, conferences, professional seminars, and by reading journals and publications.
  12. Participate in on going cross-training and professional development activities with other Student Services providers such as financial aid, CMVE, records/enrollment and Domicile to facilitate excellent customer service.
  13. Participate in the development, planning, and implementation of college-wide student success programs to enhance student development and promote the students’ academic, social, and multicultural development. Collaborate with other departments to encourage student participation.
  14. Serve on college committees and be actively involved in the Governance System; in addition to serving as a representative of Tidewater Community College when working closely with the community through schools, civic organization meetings, public agencies, and college fairs.
  15. Interpret and uphold federal, state, VCCS, campus and college policies and guidelines.
  16. Perform other tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated ability to counsel students in an educational setting on academic matters.
  2. Demonstrated ability to provide career counseling to students in an educational setting.
  3. Demonstrated ability to assist students with personal issues that may impact academic progress and student development.
  4. Demonstrated ability to counsel students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated professional counseling techniques and problem solving skills.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and implementing retention strategies for student success.
  7. Demonstrated ability to present and facilitate information sessions and workshops related to student success.
  8. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
  10. Demonstrated ability in oral and written communication skills.
  11. Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or other related degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of college programs and support services preferred.
  2. Knowledge of Virginia Community College System (VCCS) policies and procedures preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to use the VCCS Student Information System preferred.
  4. Advising/counseling experience in a community college preferred.

Hiring Range Expected salary range of $56,610 to $84,433.
Salary Information

Actual salary will be determined based on individual qualifications and experience with consideration for internal alignment factors. The college offers an excellent benefits package.
