Company Capital One

Job Title: Creative Director

JobID: capitalone2-R29380

Location: Vienna, VA, 22180, USA

Description: Towers Crescent (12066), United States of America, Vienna, Virginia

At Capital One, we’re building a leading information-based technology company. Still founder-led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Fairbank, Capital One is on a mission to help our customers succeed by bringing ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to banking. We measure our efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We are succeeding because they are succeeding.

Guided by our shared values, we thrive in an environment where collaboration and openness are valued. We believe that innovation is powered by perspective and that teamwork and respect for each other lead to superior results. We elevate each other and obsess about doing the right thing. Our associates serve with humility and a deep respect for their responsibility in helping our customers achieve their goals and realize their dreams. Together, we are on a quest to change banking for good.

Creative Director

Data Visualization makes data tangible for our company and customers, thereby empowering us all by transforming what’s unknown into something that’s known. The Practice enables these outcomes by digging into data sets, large and small, to manifest it in enlightening, understandable ways to fuel decision-making.

We're looking for a Creative Director to help build this new practice within our Design organization, which partners with Tech and Product to create ultra-powerful, ultra-helpful experiences for internal teams and customers, alike.

**WHY WE CARE**

+ Because we’re aiming to Change Banking for Good, which means being brave enough to change how people interact with us AND their money, for the better

+ Because we want to know things that’ll enable us to make strategic decisions with the greatest degree of confidence, driven by real-time data

+ Because insights should be accessible to us, both as employees of Capital One, and as customers who are trying to make sense of their money

**WHO ARE YOU? LIKELY SOMEONE WHO…**

+ Is deeply creative and driven by playfulness, wonder, and a thirst for understanding

+ A natural problem solver with a knack for uncovering elegant solutions

+ Is a confident leader who’s humble and never pretends to be someone you're not

+ Enjoys fully immersing yourself in data, business constraints, and customer problems you're interpreting

+ Asks questions to get at the deeper-level “why” because you prioritize relevance and meaning over the artifact or visualization itself

+ Is meticulous and incisive. You've likely spotted the three (at least?) mistakes I've made in this job description and wish you could right them (though you wouldn't let it keep you up at night).

+ Is outcome-focused and have an exceptional track record to prove it

**HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN THIS ROLE**

As a Capital One Creative Director, you may work on everything from customer-facing applications, physical installations, and internal tools and platforms. Here’s what you'll be doing:

**Build**

You'll help grow the Data Visualization practice by recruiting and hiring designers, establishing design thinking practices, and roadmapping projects. You will establish relationships with outside design partners and act as liaison between internal resources and external.

**Design**

You will help your team design human-centered data visualizations through conceptualization, guidance, and brainstorming. You have a relentless drive to find the most elegant and succinct form of data representation. You value equally the beauty and utility of information design and strive to deliver a solution that encompasses both. You will work to create consistent design solutions within the broader company brand.

**Collaborate**

You'll work closely with visual designers, engineers, and stakeholders. You will effectively communicate your team's concepts and solutions to the product owners and solicit constructive feedback to facilitate the optimal solution. You will create a positive, welcoming environment that's safe for all participants to share ideas and perspectives.

**Lead**

You will lead and develop a growing team of designers. Your attention to nuance, craftsmanship, utility, and elegance will instill these values in your team. You'll encourage innovation, playfulness, inclusion, exploration, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity. You'll guide by example and also by your deep concern for the wellbeing of your teammates. You are comfortable in both expressing and receiving radical candor in feedback. You'll lead multiple concurrent projects from inception to completion and establish roadmaps and milestones for each.

**Seek**

You will sit with product owners and users to discuss their problem space. Rather than take orders on what to build, you'll engage users in conversations to uncover how they do their work, what tools they use, how they understand their work, and how they currently solve their problems. You will work to explore pain points and areas for meaningful improvement.

**Share**

You'll build a culture of sharing and look for opportunities to celebrate the work of your team. Your participation in external and internal communities alike is expected and encouraged. Your excitement and belief in your work is infectious.

**Basic Qualifications:**

+ Bachelor’s degree or military experience

+ At least 5 years’ experience in data visualization design or graphic design

+ At least 2 years’ experience managing designers

+ At least 5 years’ experience with Illustrator and Photoshop

+ At least 2 years' experience with Sketch, Balsamiq, or other mockup tools

+ At least 2 years’ experience working on cross-functional teams

**Preferred Qualifications:**

+ Master’s degree in Data Visualization or Graphic Design

+ 2+ years’ experience as an Art Director

+ 7+ years’ experience designing data visualizations

At this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.
