**External Job Description:**



Newport News Shipbuilding, a Division of Huntington Ingalls, has an opening in the Columbia Class Submarine Engineering machinery group for a Designer 2. The successful candidate for this position will perform mechanical component, equipment, specification trade studies and prepare arrangement recommendations for the design of mechanical systems in support of the Columbia Class ballistic missile submarine program. NNS Design/Engineering has responsibility for mechanical systems in the Bow, Sail, 3rd Platform Habitability Spaces, AMR 1 & 2 and Torpedo Room.

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

**Preferred Qualifications:**



It is preferred that a candidate have experience in Marine Machinery Design.



Applicant should also have experience using 3D modeling tools and understanding of GD&T application in accordance with ASMEY14.5-2009.



Candidate should exhibit the following skills:



1. 3D Modeling Skills and 3D spatial awareness;

2. Knowledge in GD&T and the development of components in accordance with ASME Y14.5;

3. Understanding of welding, hydraulics, and electrical interfaces as they apply to our Mechanical components;

4. Capable of interfacing with Engineering to understand design requirements of various mechanical systems and lead other designers in the development of these systems to meet the requirements; and

5. Coordinate discussions and incorporate design aspects with manufacturing, tooling, materials and planning trades.



Contacts are frequent with individuals representing outside organizations, and/or individuals of significant importance within the company. Contacts involve planning and preparation of the communications, require skill, tact, persuasion and/or negotiation to accomplish the objectives
