Southeastern Virginia Training Center (2100 Steppingstone Square Chesapeake, VA  23320) is seeking applicants to provide direct support and training to people with challenging behaviors who are diagnosed with intellectual/developmental disabilities and mental health issues.  This position is also responsible for medication administration and will act in the capacity of a shift leader for the home.   

Positions available on 2nd shift (1:45PM-10:15PM) and 3rd shift (10PM-6AM)

Job Description:

  • Serve as a lead worker or shift leader in a residential home.
  • Coordinate daily schedules and work assignments.
  • Provide a variety of support services for adults with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviors including physical aggression.
  • Work within a person-centered educational model to provide support, educational/training, and supervision of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Administer medications.
  • Collect and record pertinent data and complete required paperwork including documentation of services provided to individuals. 
  • Contribute to and maintain an environment that is supportive of individual choices, enriching, homelike, safe and nurturing for people with disabilities.
  • Support and instruct individuals in a range of daily living skills including: self-help, personal hygiene, independent living, and social development.  
  • Implement daily training programs and behavior support plans. 
  • Monitor leisure time, recreational, social and activities of choice.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment.    

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid Driver's License.  Candidates with out-of-state Driver’s License must provide a copy of their driving record transcript prior to employment. 
  • Minimum of one-year experience or a combination of education/experience working with people who have intellectual/developmental disabilities as well as aggressive behaviors and/or mental health issues
  • Must be able to effectively communicate, interact positively and professionally with peers, other team members and supervisors. 
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions; observe and accurately report and describe observations in writing.
  • Good comprehension of English, spoken and written.
  • Must be able to learn and acquire skills of basic care and treatment plans; to read, understand and carry out individualized programs and to recognize and appropriately react to behavioral, medical, and other emergencies. 
  • Must be able to accurately administer medications. 
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position to include:  standing, bending, walking, pushing/pulling, lifting up to 50 pounds or ¼ of your body weight, and intervening with aggressive behaviors.
  • Must successfully complete the facility's Pre-service training program for Direct Support Professional Staff, to include Person Centered Approach techniques, CPR/First Aid Certification, TOVA, medication administration, nutritional management and physical/behavioral management, for continued employment.  (Paid pre service training class is 4 weeks long from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm).

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience as a lead worker or other supervisory experience in a related field.
  • Experience supporting individuals with autism, severely challenging behaviors, or mental health issues
  • Related education or experience, either personally or professionally, working with individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, or in the medical field
  • Prefer some knowledge of program activities including recreation, leisure skills, communication, vocational, and educational programming.
  • Previous medication administration experience preferred.    

Salary:  Commonwealth of Virginia Pay band 3; commensurate w/experience
