Director of State Governmental Relations (FA469A)

Old Dominion University, a Commonwealth of Virginia state-supported doctoral institution with a main campus in Norfolk and higher education centers located in Virginia Beach, Hampton and Suffolk, is seeking an experienced individual to serve as the Director of State Governmental Relations. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Engagement and Enrollment Services, with dotted lines to the Vice President for Administration and Finance and the University President, this position manages the University’s governmental relations initiatives and activities. The position will be primarily based in Richmond and will work on the Norfolk campus as needed.

 

The responsibilities of the Director include but are not limited to the following:

  • In consultation with the president and senior leadership, develop the University’s legislative priorities and create strategy to propagate the University’s legislative agenda.

  • Monitor and problem solve state legislative and policy issues impacting the University.

  • Cultivate, create and maintain strong working relationships with state lawmakers and staff as well as the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) staff and board.

  • Serve as the University’s full-time liaison in Richmond during the General Assembly session.

  • Develop and submit key documents, such as the 6-year plan, in coordination with university leaders.

  • Advise the president, university leaders, and the Board of Visitors on policy decisions with governmental implications.

  • Coordinate events and visits to the campus involving state lawmakers and staff.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of state higher education issues.

Requirements

The successful candidate will preferably hold a master’s degree, however a bachelor’s degree with experience working on the state level in government relations will be considered.

 

Candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to identify legislative issues of relevance and/or concern, solve problems and successfully propagate the University’s legislative agenda; possess excellent interpersonal skills and exceptional written and oral communication skills; demonstrate knowledge of legislative process and of political and governmental protocol; demonstrate the ability to manage a range of functions and to balance multiple tasks; and demonstrate the ability to coordinate and supervise special events. Experience working in higher education and Virginia legislative relations is preferred.
