Job Description Summary

This position coordinates a Women’s Center site on the Portsmouth Campus of Tidewater Community College. The Coordinator provides educational programming and direct support services to students that align with the college-wide mission of the Officer for Intercultural Learning’s Women’s Center’s mission, while supporting the unique campus needs of students, faculty, and staff.


Plan and implement an annual programming calendar on general education student learning outcomes on personal development and social and cultural understanding. Provide logistical support to Office for Intercultural Learning and Women’s Center programs. Assist with engaging students in programs and initiatives on campus. Manage the Women’s Center, as a professional, inclusive, and welcoming space. Manage the Mother’s Room on campus. Provide brief screening and direct (non-counseling) services, including issuing emergency assistance funds and referring students to campus and community agencies, to support student retention. Work collaboratively with academic and student support services faculty and staff to contribute to student success and retention initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate educational programs and activities that address gender issues related to career choice, student learning and student success. Demonstrated ability to engage faculty and students in planning and implementing programs. Demonstrated knowledge of non-traditional career options and obstacles faced by women. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituency groups. Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a team member. Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships with community agencies and employers. Ability to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the efficacy of programs. Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the mission of a comprehensive community college system. Technology training and experience with Microsoft Office Suite to substantiate required skills, abilities and knowledge in the preparation of multiple types of correspondence, reports, databases, spreadsheets, client tracking, email, and routine office procedures. Knowledge of student information systems, and their use in advising and providing student services. Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver presentations and organize special programs and events. Ability to interpret and apply Virginia Community College System (VCCS), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and college policies and procedures as they relate to student services and faculty support.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Virginia Community College System. Experience in student affairs and advising students in a high volume, fast-paced, higher education environment at the community college or university level. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in counseling, education, education administration, social sciences, or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Work Schedule

29 hours a week is required. Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Fridays from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Note: Programming may impact core hours.
