The Exercise/Aquatics Specialist position plans, teaches and coordinates land and water based exercise classes for the residents and staff.  Some experience teaching fitness is a plus.  The Exercise/Aquatic Specialist assists the Exercise/Aquatic Coordinator with the planning and implementation of a comprehensive fitness program that integrates current wellness, and issues congruent with, the Wellness philosophy of the community.

The Ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science/Physiology, Sports Medicine, Therapeutic Recreation, Athletic Training or other related field.  

Westminster-Canterbury offers over 60 classes a week with a wide variety of group fitness classes and personal training.  With our expanding Personal Training program, certification in this area is preferred.  Experience, specialty certificates, and knowledge of nutrition relating to physical well-being is a plus.  Ex: Yoga, Pilates, Group Exercise, Hiit, Aqua Group Exercise, Tai Chi, Ai Chi, Zumba, etc. 

Candidates must be, or be willing to complete swimming pool/spa operator training course.  

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Teach a minimum of three classes daily to include active participation as needed to effectively lead the participants

  • Tolerate the warm temperatures in the pool area

  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead group exercises classes for both the land and water.

  • Set up and implement personal training programs

  • Prepare schedules for exercise and aquatics programs that meet the identified needs of residents and, to the extent possible, staff members

  • Identify fitness levels, progression and regression, through various assessment and exercise testing procedures

  • Provide a safe environment for pool and fitness center patrons through proper maintenance of equipment following regulations set forth by the  Health Dept.

  • Promote interest and increase participation at classes and programs through on-going evaluation

  • Assist with health education classes/workshops for residents and staff, utilizing internal and external resources

  • Report resident health concerns to appropriate staff

  • Assist with special events and work closely with other departments to ensure coordination of community wide events

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or years’ experience teaching

  • Certifications in Personal Training, Group Exercise and/or other specialty classes preferred

  • Experience working with older adults desired

  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications

  • Upbeat and engaging

  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, Monday – Friday

  • Organized and detail oriented

  • Able to walk, bend and lift up to 50 pounds

  • Physically able to assist in resident evacuation in the event of fire or other emergency

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Instructs land and aquatic based exercise programs

  • Prepares schedules for exercise and aquatics programs that meet the identified needs of residents and to the extent possible, staff members

  • Identifies fitness levels, progression and regression, through various assessment and exercise testing procedures

  • Provides a safe environment for pool and fitness room users through proper maintenance of equipment and areas following regulations set forth by the Health Dept.

  • Orders and maintains supplies as necessary for efficient function of the pools and fitness areas

  • Tracks, records, and reports resident participation in classes, pool and fitness room usage

  • Promotes interest and increases participation at classes and programs through on-going evaluation

  • Assists with health education classes/workshops for residents and staff, utilizing internal and external resources

  • Reports resident health concerns to appropriate staff

  • Provides orientation for new Fitness Center participants and assist with resident participation files

  • Serves as liaison with independent personal trainers and therapists as needed

  • Provides direction for volunteers working in pool and fitness areas

  • Trains class leaders to oversee class in the absence of staff when needed

  • Assists with special events and works closely with other departments to ensure coordination of community wide events

  • Serves on inter and intradepartmental teams to promote the wellness philosophy throughout the community
