Job Description Summary

Tidewater Community College seeks applications for 2 part-time GED Instructors.

The GED Instructor of the grant-funded BRIDGE-Plus Program will provide instruction to students with varying academic levels while integrating GED skills, reading and math skills, social justice and community issues, and culture at Tidewater Community College’s Portsmouth Campus. This Out of School Youth (OSY) grant has been funded by Opportunity Inc. of Hampton Roads.

The GED Instructor is to work with individual students and groups of students to (1) assess their educational status and interests; (2) help students meet necessary goals and qualify to get a GED; (3) prepare students to take GED exam; (4) independently analyze and understand student educational levels to provide appropriate instruction, support, and resources that will ultimately lead to greater student persistence and retention; and (5) track and evaluate student academic progress.


Instruct students on material needed in order to earn their GED. Teach basic skills encompassing Math, Science, English, and Literature. Present instructional content in accordance with identified goals, objectives and standards. Develop lesson plans and modify accordingly. Submit lesson plans to program administrator weekly. Partner with other student support services and resources to enhance student learning. Help students prepare for GED exam. Assess students’ readiness to take exam. Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served. Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans. Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities. Utilize various curriculum resources. Provide TABE and Basic Skills Deficiency (BSD) assessments. Analyze data and plan instruction accordingly. Evaluate and monitor students’ progress. Meet with students every 50 hours to discuss progress and schedule TABE post-testing. Submit progress reports to the program administrator monthly denoting student progress. Submit all required paperwork and reports to program administrator/designee in a timely manner. Participate in required staff development programs and meetings. Maintain grade books. Maintain accurate attendance records. Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures. Assess program needs and make recommendations accordingly. Work with program administrator/designee to ensure initiatives are being met. Tutor students on an individual basis. Serve as an ambassador for the adult and continuing education program. Develop and submit emergency lesson plans in the event of an absence. Contact the program administrator personally in the event of an absence. Secure a substitute from the approved sub list as presented by the program administrator. Read and stay abreast of current topics in education. Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.

Ability to input data, maintain documentation, and communicate between stakeholders using designated computer systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree.

Experience working as a GED instructor, teacher, and/or adult literacy professional. Experience working in a community college environment or related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
