Interceptor Technician

 

HRSD’s  apprenticeship  programs  are  a  combination  of  on-the-job  training  and  related  classroom   instruction.All  can  be   completed  in  three  or   four   years. You   must  be  willing  to work your scheduled shift and  attend   class  at  least  two   nights  per   week. A  Math Skills Assessment Test is required prior to entry into HRSD”s Apprenticeship   Program. Work Schedule Monday through Friday 6:45 am – 3:30 pm. Overtime as needed.

 

The Interceptor Technician position is subject to cross training in three distinct areas.  The incumbent 

will supervise two assistants in the servicing and repair of sewer mains & appurtenances and when working 

with the Interceptor crew; services and maintains a large number of pumping stations; demonstrates 

semiskilled and skilled mechanical work involving responsibility for the daily servicing and maintenance 

of a large number of pumping stations;  supervises one assistant when working with the Pump Stations crew;  

functions as chief assistant to Interceptor Foreman of maintenance crews usually numbering 4-6 people;
 performs involved and difficult maintenance and repair on Interceptor System force mains, gravity 

mains and pump stations; occasionally supervises the work of a small group of Interceptor Assistants when 

working with the Maintenance and Repair crew.

Requirements

1. Education

Entry Level:  High School diploma or GED equivalency.  

Fully Qualified:  Completion of classroom and On-the-Job training of  HRSD’s Apprenticeship program for this trade, or  equivalent, as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee. 

 

2. Experience

Entry Level:  Prefer experience in construction/repair of sewer lines; operation and maintenance of major wastewater interceptor system and pump stations; experience in general construction trades, including concrete work, carpentry, earth work, construction, welding and steel work; familiarity with and ability to operate heavy construction equipment, to include supervisory skills.  

 

Fully Qualified:  Experience listed above, with completion of HRSD’s Apprenticeship Program and 4 years experience, or equivalent as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee.

 

3. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to operate heavy construction equipment.  Ability to follow instructions, procedures and schedules, both written and orally.  Must have comprehensive knowledge of sewer lines, valves, etc.  Must have working knowledge of the plumbing and painting trades.  Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and related diagrams needed in the field.  Must have working knowledge of materials and methods used in various construction trades.  Must be able to plan/organize work and maintenance schedules.

 

4. Special License

Entry Level: Must possess and maintain a valid Operator’s License (from state of residence); CDL or CDL Permit preferred. CDL must be obtained within 6 months of appointment to position. 

 

Fully Qualified Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s license (from state of residence). 

 

TRAINING LEVELS

This position is fully qualified at a Grade 5, with completion of the fourth year of HRSD’s Apprenticeship program, and four years experience.  The following training levels are established for personnel who are not fully qualified:

5a -     Completion of the equivalent of three years of Apprenticeship classes and 75% of on-the-job training skills  

5b  -     Completion of the equivalent of two years of Apprenticeship classes and 50% of on-the-job training skills    

5c  -      Completion of the equivalent of one year of Apprenticeship classes and 25% of on-the-job training skills 

5d  -     Entry level requirements

 

If Assigned To A Training Level, Fully Qualified Level Must Be Consistently Pursued, As A Condition Of Appointment.  Failure To Do So Will Result In Removal From The Position And Potentially Employment With The HRSD.
