Legal Assistant

Norfolk law firm seeks a Legal Assistant with 4 years of experience in a variety of practice areas to support attorneys in departments such as Trust and Estates, Construction and Government Contracts, Corporation, and Employee Benefits work. This position requires a highly motivated, pro-active self-starter with excellent organization and communication skills. Litigation experience is a plus.

Essential Position Responsibilities: 

  • Drafts, reviews, proofreads, and routes routine correspondence, reports, and legal documents
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Organizes client conferences and attorney meetings
  • Communicates and schedules appointments with clients
  • Schedules couriers, court reporters, and other special functions
  • Prepares expense reports
  • Makes travel arrangements
  • Maintains attorney calendars and proactively anticipates the attorneys’ needs
  • Files and secures client documents
  • Enters time into billing system

 Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of preparing and filing pleadings, briefs, notices, and subpoenas
  • Highly organized
  • Excellent time management skills to meet deadlines
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Able to work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of Microsoft software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Understand the courts’ expectations for filings and procedures
  • Positive and professional attitude
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with others in a team
  • Ability to follow firm procedures and adhere to the firm’s personnel policies

 Experience:

  • 4 years relevant experience in a professional legal setting is required
