Job Description Summary

Tidewater Community College seeks applications for two (2) part-time Math Tutors on the Norfolk Campus.

Tutors provide education to students supporting student retention and success initiatives of Tidewater Community College. Tutors provide one on one and small group educational support in a Learning Assistance Center (LAC) setting to increase student academic achievement.

Tutors use a Socratic method of questioning to engage students in problem-solving strategies related to gaining knowledge and developing greater comprehension of syllabi, instructors’ learning objectives, assignments and course content areas. Tutors demonstrate transferable academic skills to student supporting what to learn, how to learn, and how to respond to relevant course materials as assigned by instructors reducing learning dependency on tutor staff. Tutors also partner with instructors to offer outreach learning opportunities in the classroom and team up to offer course relevant workshops.

Tutors extend learning strategies to include reading to locate and comprehend information, critical thinking applications, problem solving, and note taking skills relevant to course subject matter and basic computer literacy assistance as follows:

  • Math courses will require experience demonstrating to a student “how to learn math, learning how to think mathematically (this includes developing good math “habits of mind”), and learning to become a more responsible math student (bring necessary paper, pencil, book, etc. to class; pay attention in class; do and turn in required assignments) are important skills. The ability to demonstrate precise, clear thinking and problem-solving activities when working alongside a math student is necessary.
  • All course subjects require tutors to demonstrate using textbooks, handbooks, and online resources as references to assist subject review and mastery. This is a critical collaborative learning practice between tutor and student.
  • Meet with students one-on-one or in small-groups, in a learning assistance center lab.
  • The ability to plan the integration and practice of study strategies combining what to learn with how to learn it, students are able to develop both content competency and transferable academic skills.
  • Report immediately to the coordinator when critical issue(s) arise.
  • Attend and participate in tutor group meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Be familiar with campus resources available to students.
  • Use Tutor-Evaluation Checklist with every student.
  • Be able to tutor students in basic computer literacy to include email account set-up, create a word document, saving a document and navigating Blackboard.
  • Tutor students in word problems.
  • Assist with additional duties as needed, for example, covering front desk of the Learning Assistance Center, answering telephones.
  • Partner with instructors to present course relevant workshops and LAC information.
  • Maintain a resourceful supply of course relevant handouts in learning assistance centers.
  • Perform other clerical duties as assigned by the coordinator.
  • A desire to express patience, encouragement, and empathy to students having difficulties.
