Optical Network Engineer



Capital One is looking for an experienced Optical Engineer to join our network engineering team. You will join a talented group responsible for the design, implementation, and support of all optical and IP-based network infrastructure across the enterprise. In this role, you will help lead the design and deployment of new optical networks across the Capital One footprint.



**Responsibilities:**



+ Design and implement Ultra Long-Haul and metro DWDM networks in support of Capital One’s ongoing public cloud migration.

+ Work with carriers to ensure that connectivity, bandwidth, and diversity requirements are met.

+ Create and maintain enterprise network design standards and network topology diagrams.

+ Review and implement changes to existing DWDM and SONET networks to improve resiliency and meet connectivity and capacity demands.

+ Partner with carrier provisioning and network operations teams to ensure the success of new deployments. Ensure that operational feedback is incorporated into network designs.

+ Serve as Tier-4 escalation support for critical operational incident resolution.

+ Identify gaps in current designs and propose appropriate solutions based on technical and business drivers.

+ Provide support for audit and ad-hoc consulting engagements.



**Successful candidates will possess:**



+ A thorough understanding of optical networking technologies, including DWDM and SONET.

+ Extensive experience designing physical infrastructure including conduit layouts, point of entry for carrier access, fiber path diversity, and carrier hand-off.

+ Experience with optical planning & modeling tools.

+ Knowledge of the G.709 protocol.

+ Ability to lead the design, configuration, and support of circuit connectivity on carrier rings.

+ Good working knowledge of IP networking fundamentals. Knowledge of both L2 switching and L3 routing is desirable.

+ Experience designing, implementing, and supporting optical transport networks using systems from vendors such as Ciena, Tellabs, and Fujitsu.

+ Excellent analytical ability with strong verbal and written communication skills.

+ Strong project- and time-management skills with a successful track record of troubleshooting complex problems and delivering timely solutions.

+ The desire and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.



**Basic Qualifications:**



+ Bachelor’s degree or military experience.

+ At least 5 years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting optical transport networks

+ At least 2 years of experience in campus network fiber planning.

+ At least 2 years of experience managing large-scale IT infrastructure projects.



**Preferred Qualifications:**



+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical disciplines.

+ Ciena Optical Communication Consultant certification

+ 2+ years of experience with network capacity planning

+ 2+ years of experience of vendor management
