Job Description Summary

Provide individual and small group tutoring for Open Door Project students in the specified discipline for which hired and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
The Open Door Project is a federally funded Student Support Services/TRiO program, providing academic support to disadvantaged college students.

Function

Tutor students in specified discipline and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses. Participate in professional development offerings. Meet with Academic Skills Advisor to plan appropriate academic support for students. Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed. Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Peer Tutor.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in the subject area assigned to tutor with at least a “B” or better average in content area. Peer Tutor must have at least sophomore standing, be knowledgeable of content area, and have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work with a diverse student population. Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles. Ability to work well with staff and students. Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress. Math tutors must at least be proficient in math from developmental through college algebra. Science tutors must be proficient in at least one or more of the following biological, earth and/or chemical sciences. Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours.

Work Schedule

10 to 29 hours per week to be scheduled Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Hours vary due to student and class scheduling throughout the year. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.

Salary Information

Tutors without an Associate Degree in the field will be paid $8.00 per hour.

Tutors with an Associate Degree in the tutoring field will be paid $8.75 per hour.
