The Technology and Information Director plays a key role in decision-making related to education and technology. He or she works under the direction of the Headmaster to guide the Technology Department and help deliver the expected strategic benefits to Norfolk Academy and its many constituencies.

 

The Technology and Information Director (hereafter referred to as TID) provides expertise in maintaining current technologies while continually exploring emerging technologies to assist in the direction, selection, and use of those technologies at Norfolk Academy.  The TID couples leadership skills with strategic planning and forecasting skills.  In addition to technical aptitude, he or she is a decisive problem-solver with effective communication skills.  The TID is able to identify organizational areas for improvement and efficiency and then structure and direct the necessary changes.

 

He or she works directly with the Assistant Headmaster for Business and Auxiliary Programs and Division Directors to address timely technology investments and rollout of specific technology projects and initiatives.  The TID works closely with the Division Directors and Technology Integration Team to ensure that the requirements for teaching and learning such as hardware, software, network, and professional development needs are supported and sustainable.  He or she will also be responsible for working through the pedagogical aspects in partnership with the Technology Integration Team. The TID is responsible for ensuring that information technology planning, purchasing, training, and implementation are in alignment with the school’s technology vision statement.

 

The TID plans for and implements the investment of technology assets to ensure optimal operation of information technology systems for the extended Norfolk Academy workforce.  The TID also leads the internal technology team that is responsible for managing and maintaining day-to-day operations of the technology infrastructure. The TID is directly responsible for technology associates and allocates their roles and tasks. The TID’s management of the technology department emphasizes the need for a strong teamwork ethic in order to successfully deliver IT in support of the Norfolk Academy community. The TID engages with external technology vendors, suppliers, and outsourcing partners in support of network and application platform management.  He or she must possess sound negotiation skills to leverage organizational purchasing power to get the best possible value for hardware, systems, software application platforms and professional services procurement. The TID is directly responsible for preparing and managing the Technology Department budget required to deliver these products, platforms and services. The TID ensures that The Norfolk Academy is flexible enough to adapt and adhere to changing needs. He or she cultivates and maintains relationships with key information technology associations, keeps abreast of all the latest industry trends and future directions. 


Requirements

Technology and Information Director Skills and Knowledge

The Technology and Information Director is responsible for managing the broad range of people and services within the Technology Department. He or she is also responsible for developing and maintaining the Technology Services section of the Norfolk Academy’s Policies and Procedures Manual, as well as for working with vendors, contractors, and suppliers to ensure Norfolk Academy obtains the best products and services at the fairest prices possible within the prescribed time limitations. He or she is also responsible for managing the voice, video, and data communications infrastructure elements of all the major construction and renovation projects. In addition, he or she prepares and manages the portion of the Technology Department budget required to deliver these products and services. The Director is responsible for the review of all Norfolk Academy computer and technology purchases to ensure compatibility with the infrastructure and environment and optimal use of Norfolk Academy’s purchasing resources. The TID is also responsible for the growth and development of the people who work in the department. He or she also serves as a resource to the Division Directors and Technology Integration Team on issues of curriculum integration and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field.
  • 5-10 years’ successful experience in information technology in progressively more responsible leadership positions, including planning and directing the strategic use of technology for stakeholder engagement and management efficiency.
  • Strong communication, relationship, problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated effective management skills including project management, planning, employee supervision, and team development.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with constituents from the entire school community.
  • Working knowledge of hardware/software specific to a school environment.
  • Progressive experience managing functions and departments responsible for technology systems and work flow.
  • Knowledge and support of Norfolk Academy’s Philosophy and Objectives, curriculum, and technology goals.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation, and coordination of the information and technology systems. 
  • Develop and maintain technology department policies and procedures aimed at maximizing effectiveness and minimizing costs related to the acquisition, implementation and operation of IT systems.
  • Develop and monitor the approved annual technology budget for information and technology systems.
  • Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive user training program. Provide directly or arrange new user training and advanced training for existing users.
  • Serve as source of information on trends, research, applications, and effective practices related to information technology. Research and recommend system development priorities.
  • Facilitate, assess, and evaluate the growth and development of the people who work within the information technology department.
