Job Summary: Responsible for following all policies and procedures associated with the coding classification schemes to assign diagnostic and procedural codes to the trauma patient population. Contributes to the proper management of health information through consistent and accurate code assignment processes adhering to all regulatory coding principles. Responsible for overseeing trauma registry activity, including maintenance of a comprehensive trauma registry meeting the requirements of the Virginia Trauma Designation process. This position is responsible for downloading accurate data to the state and national data registries. Additionally, this individual coordinates the collection and analysis of statistical data related to the clinical outcomes for the designated patient populations, supporting the initiatives for outcomes research. The Registrar works to improve the quality of the trauma program through the tracking and dissemination of various quality indicators.
Education: High School Graduate or GED required, registered health information technology or RN preferred.
Certification: Requires specialty certification within two years of employment (Certification Examination for Trauma Registrars issued by the American Trauma Society).
Experience: Previous experience in anatomy, medical terminology, medical records, and/or coding preferred. Previous employment in a healthcare facility. Computer experience required, proficiency in use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Capable of passing a program of instruction in Windows management within 6 months of employment. Successfully complete a course in Trauma Registry and AIS within 12 months of employment. EMS experience helpful.
