Job Description Summary

The Associate Dean position at Tidewater Community College provides sound operational management and strong academic leadership for a designated selection of instructional programs and related disciplines grouped within a Career Pathway.
While based at one of the college’s campuses, the Associate Dean may be assigned a college-wide leadership role for specified disciplines and programs so as to achieve appropriate consistency, currency, and excellence across multiple campuses in academic programming and delivery of instruction. The Associate works collaboratively with others in the college community to strengthen the quality of the teaching and learning environment so as to foster the development of the whole student.
The Associate Dean for the Beazley School of Nursing reports to the pathway Dean for Health Professions; assists the Dean in management and oversight of curricula in the Health Professions Pathway (e.g., the Pharmacy Technician program and health courses); serves as a member of the campus administrative staff organization and the college-wide Academic and Student Affairs Council; and works collaboratively with other members of the college community to advance the college in accord with its vision, mission, core values, and strategic goals.

Function
  1. CURRICULUM
    • Direct the analysis of the learning, career, and skills needs of the constituencies served by the college and the courses of study appropriate for responding to those needs, consistent with college policies and, as appropriate, with accreditation and licensing agencies’ requirements.
    • Serves as the administrative academic leader for the Beazley School of Nursing, directly attending to matters of program accreditation and compliance.
    • Direct the design and development of curricula, courses, syllabi and specifications for textbooks, materials, laboratory and technical resources, consistent with college policies and procedures.
    • Oversee the evaluation of programs and courses for currency, relevancy, and effectiveness.
  2. ACADEMIC STANDARDS AND ASSESSMENT
    • Provide leadership and communicate standards, goals, and definitions of learning outcomes and teaching requirements for the nursing program to ensure consistent delivery of quality instruction.
    • Work with appropriate stakeholders in the development and implementation of effective methods and tools for measuring learning outcomes and students’ educational goals.
    • Review and evaluate learning results through outcomes assessment and student evaluation of instruction to ensure compliance with regional and specialized accreditation requirements.
    • Initiate and direct needed corrective actions to ensure program effectiveness and efficiency.
    • In collaboration with the Pathway Dean, observe and evaluate full-time faculty performance in instructional settings in compliance with TCC’s Faculty Development and Evaluation Plan.
  3. FACULTY AND STAFF HIRING, SUPERVISION, AND DEVELOPMENT
    • In collaboration with the Pathway Dean, the Associate Dean will direct and oversee the recruitment and selection of full-time teaching faculty in accordance with the college’s procedure; coordinate with the search committee to recommend candidates for hiring as delineated in the procedure.
    • Supervise the selection of adjunct faculty in concert with the respective department chair (if applicable); review, evaluate, and recommend individuals for adjunct faculty appointments; manage the hiring process in compliance with college policies and procedures.
    • Recommend credentialing of full-time and adjunct teaching faculty.
    • Supervise the division’s assigned full-time and adjunct teaching faculty with the assistance of department chair (if applicable).
    • Perform or supervise the recruitment, selection, and hiring of staff in coordination with the respective department chair (if applicable, including alignment of their assigned responsibilities to the core academic functions.
    • Supervise or oversee the supervision of assigned staff in coordination with the respective department chair (if applicable).
    • Collaborate with the college’s professional development resources such as the Batten Centers for Teaching Excellence, the new faculty academy, and the Knowledge Center to offer meaningful and engaging seminars, lectures, workshops, and other relevant opportunities for assigned faculty and staff.
    • Encourage faculty members’ involved participation in outside professional development conferences, institutes, and similar forums aligned with the college’s mission, vision and strategic plan.
    • Review, evaluate, recommend modifications where needed, and approve each full-time faculty member’s final professional development plan.
    • In collaboration with the Pathway Dean, evaluate the performance of individual full-time teaching faculty in accordance with the college’s Full-Time Teaching Faculty Development and Evaluation Plan.
  4. STUDENT ACADEMIC SUPPORT
    • Ensure academic policies are applied appropriately and any exceptions are granted and documented in a consistent manner.
    • Collaborate with Student Services personnel to ensure students are appropriately advised.
    • Refer students to appropriate support services as necessary.
  5. OPERATIONAL OVERSIGHT
    • Develop and manage the academic delivery of instruction including, but not limited to, class schedules, the efficient and effective use of learning spaces, faculty assignments, and teaching and laboratory workloads.
    • In collaboration with the Pathway Dean and Campus Provost, oversee the procurement of materials and supplies needed for the Beazley School of Nursing.
    • In collaboration with the Pathway Dean and Campus Provost, oversee facility management as applicable.
  6. BUDGET DEVELOPMENT AND OVERSIGHT
    • Analyze the resources needed to fulfill the nursing program academic obligations including development of cost-benefit analyses and forecasts of program demands.
    • Prepare fiscally sound budget proposals including rationale regarding expected results to be achieved from expenditures including, for example, the faculty staffing plan.
    • Inform, assist, encourage, and coordinate with faculty to help take a worthwhile grant or sponsored program from concept to proposal.
    • Monitor expenditures, assess fiscal trends, and take action to assure budget integrity.
  7. COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS AND PARTNERSHIPS
    • Establish and build relationships with employers, community agencies, educational institutions (K12, colleges and universities, VDOE), accrediting bodies, municipalities, governmental and military organizations to foster job placements, to review and improve curricula, to create opportunities such as internships, and to enhance program accreditation standing and transfer opportunities. Coordinate these efforts with appropriate college units, such as the Center for Military and Veterans Education and campus career centers.
    • Facilitate meetings and events such as program advisory committees, workshops, conferences, fairs and symposia.
  8. INSTRUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY
    • Develop and promote methods for the integration of simulation and technology in the curricula using current and emerging technologies in teaching and learning.
    • Provide guidance and assistance to faculty in the development and delivery of curricula for the Beazley School of Nursing, and assists faculty with the revision and updating of existing courses.
    • Develop, coordinate, and deliver training and professional development to the nursing faculty in support of the Beazley School of Nursing technology-delivered instruction.
Required Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of community college curricula, instructional practices, and learning outcomes in disciplines related to the division.
  2. Demonstrated ability to develop courses and curricula in response to identified needs; experience with concept-based curricula is preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to coordinate the development and scheduling of programs and courses consistent with college policy.
  4. Ability to coordinate instructional and service programs with other areas of the college and responsive to the needs of a diverse student population.
  5. Proven ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude and sense of humor.
  6. Ability to supervise and evaluate assigned staff while building a highly effective team.
  7. Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
  8. Ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
  9. Knowledge of and ability to utilize administrative and instructional applications of information technology.
  10. Demonstrated skill in managing budget, equipment, and other institutional resources.
  11. Master’s degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited college or university is required; doctorate preferred.
  12. Familiarity with regional accreditation standards as well as any applicable specialized accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements, with particular attention to their implications for identifying and assessing student learning outcomes.
  13. Formal collegiate teaching experience required, with community college experience preferred.
  14. Supervisory experience in an academic setting preferred.
  15. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the comprehensive mission of community colleges.
  16. Possess a current RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 30 days of hire.
  17. At least two or more years of full-time clinical experience; emergency, critical care, preferred.
  18. Experience with medical simulation technology used in instruction to include patient simulators and related devices.
