Job Description Summary

The Horticulture Lab Manager for the Horticulture Department (Business, Information Technology, and Public Services) on the Chesapeake Campus provides support to the Horticulture program, faculty, staff and students in a professional manner. Support includes congenial, quality customer service using approved TCC policy practices.

  • Provides support and assistance to the Horticulture Instructors by preparing materials, inventories, arid scheduled class preparations.
  • Conducts vegetation, hard goods, equipment, and classroom supply ordering.
  • Maintains greenhouse structures; ensure proper functioning of lighting, heating, fans, irrigations tools, benches, misting tools and cleaning. Coordinates equipment repair as necessary with maintenance staff.
  • Provides care for plants; propagated/seeded/planted by students to include; irrigation, fertilization, lighting schedules, pinching, pruning, pest scouting, and pesticide or nutrient chemicals as necessary.
  • Develop proposed plant order, basket combinations, cultural information, and scheduling.
  • Documents crop reports per season, greenhouse temperatures, pH/EC tests, and soil tests.
  • Prepares and performs various marketing actions to include; semester class mailings, college functions, local Horticulture related events, tours, lectures, and school visits. Greets incoming visitors, and answers questions regarding the Horticulture program and information to prospective students interested in the program.
  • Assists and coordinates Horticulture club activities to include; recruitment, advertising, scheduling meetings and speakers, assist club president with minutes and food, and reconciling club budget.
  • Coordinates and assists in all aspects of the bi-annual plant sales to include advertising, setting up, making sales, breaking down, collecting monies and delivering funds to business office for deposit.
  • Reconciles plant sale monies and horticulture club budget funds with business office.
Required Qualifications

Prior experience in Horticulture related position. Basic horticulture knowledge such as watering and fertilization of plants and plant and insect identification. Experience in pesticide spraying applications. The ability to follow instructions and communicate in both written and oral formats. Ability to work under supervision and unsupervised in an average to fast paced environment. The ability to stand, walk, lift, push, pull, reach, bend and work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

Horticultural degree or certification. Supervisor experience. Private Applicator License or Registered Pesticide Technician License.

Work Schedule

Average of 29 hours per week. Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM with rotations on weekends.
