Job Description Summary

This position will serve as a RIDERCOACH and/or Sidecar/Trike Instructor in the Workforce Solutions Motorcycle Rider Training Program at Tidewater Community College. The incumbent will teach students to ride two wheeled motorcycles using the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic RiderCourse and Basic RiderCourse2 Curricula and/or three wheeled motorcycles using the Evergreen Safety Council (ESC) Basic Sidecar/Trike and Advanced Sidecar/Trike Curricula and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Virginia Rider Training Program (VRTP) standards and guidelines as well as administer, score and evaluate results of training.

Function

Conduct 2-wheeled and/or 3-wheeled motorcycle training courses in accordance with curriculum developer and State of Virginia motorcycle training program guidelines.

  • Conduct classroom and hands-on motorcycle skills portions of two-wheeled or three-wheeled motorcycle courses as applicable in accordance with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Virginia Rider Training Program (VRTP) standards and guidelines.
  • Administer written and hands-on motorcycle skills tests to students participating in motorcycle training courses in accordance with VRTP guidelines.
  • Conduct course administration for motorcycle courses to include distribution and screening of course materials as well as screening of waiver forms, emergency contact forms, class rosters, course standby student enrollment forms and course evaluation forms. Fill out and sign Safety Course Completion Certificates and DMV License Waiver Certificates as applicable for students successfully completing the courses.
  • Administer, score, and record results of written and performance skill tests to determine eligibility of students to earn their M2 or M3 classification on their driver’s license in accordance with DMV/VRTP guidelines.
  • Conduct safety inspections of all training motorcycles at the beginning of each training session, continuously assess motorcycles, students and training facility during courses to ensure a safe training environment at all times.
  • Report malfunctions of equipment (facilities, training motorcycles, etc.) to the Course Coordinator to ensure facilities and equipment which are malfunctioning are promptly repaired.
  • Perform minor maintenance to training motorcycles to include fueling, maintaining of fluid levels, tire pressure, and minor adjustments (i.e. clutch cable, idle or adjustment of controls for student fit).
  • Immediately report to Course Coordinator and Campus Security any accident or incident occurring during training. Complete accurate Accident Report and/or Incident Report for submission to Tidewater Community College safety officer.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have a M2, M3, or M (if applicable) classification on a valid driver’s license.
  • Certified as a MSF RiderCoach and/or certified by ESC as a sidecar/trike instructor by successfully completing a certified MSF RiderCoach/ESC Instructor training school.
  • Certified by DMV and VRTP to teach MSF Basic RiderCourse, Basic RiderCourse2, ESC Basic and Advanced Sidecar/Trike courses as applicable in accordance with Virginia standards and guidelines.
  • Candidate must be capable of effectively training and supervising groups up to 12 students in all types of weather conditions (i.e. cold or hot humid weather, windy, rainy conditions).
  • Candidate must possess sufficient strength to safely remove training motorcycles from and return to a storage container at the training range.

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, proven teaching strategies that promote student success.
  • Candidates should possess sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources.
