**External Job Description:**



The Network Communications Level 5 serves as the top technical expert and default lead to the network administration team.



Performs operational duties related to the Network infrastructure with a primary focus on the core network, but also interacting with Wireless, Security, and voice and video components within Newport News Shipbuilding.



The Network Communications Level 5 is an expert in wired and/or wireless networks and VOIP technologies and provides mentorship and expertise to other team members.



S/he operates and configures the core network equipment; routers, switches, security appliances, in an enterprise environment. Prepares or ensures that appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions. Provides regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems. Operational responsibility and creative flexibility to partner with Architects to design and implement new systems and technologies. Evaluates and resolves service effecting issues that impact both internal and external customers. Collaborates across teams and departments to resolve issues and engage in process improvement. Provides mentorship and expertise to other team members to promote development.



Maintains smooth operation of local area, world wide and virtual private networks (VPN). Plans, evaluates, and coordinates installation and/or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication network. Maintains technical expertise in all areas of networks and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc. May propose solutions to management to ensure all communications requirements based on future needs and current usage, configuring such solutions to optimize cost savings. Prepares or ensures that appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions. Provides regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems.



May coordinate third-party maintenance for network equipment. May design network or portion of network that include selection of hardware and software packages.

**Preferred Qualifications:**



• Minimum 14 years related experience in a large, enterprise environment preferred.



• Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP); CCIE or CCDE preferred.



• Minimum 14 years of experience serving as a lead technical expert and resource person preferred.



• Experience and demonstrated competency with networking.



• 3 years experience with Software Designed Networking.



• Experience and demonstrated competency with TCP/IP Networking, routing protocols.



• Strong troubleshooting skills to include some of the following: session level debugging and interpreting data flow, packet/protocol analyzers, debug logs, etc. to find and remedy application and telecommunications performance issues.
