Job Description Summary

The American Sign Language and Interpreter Education Program Assistant is responsible for assisting the program head and providing additional support to the ASL/INT professors and adjuncts.

Function

• Assists with office or clerical work such as filing and filling out forms.
• Creates videos or create teaching materials and resources for learning activities.
• Attending related events such as career fairs and student recruitment events.
• Tutors ASL students as requested.
• Checks to make sure all lab equipment is in working order.
• Assists program head and adjunct instructors with their classes or students as requested.
• Creates recruitment materials such as program flyers, event flyers, or program handbook or website.
• Assists with facilitating campus events such as open house, ASLVille, ASL Films, or Cultural activities and workshops for ASL and INT students.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge of, or ability to learn, program structure and schedule of classes. Knowledge of the American Deaf Community, American Sign Language, ASL-English interpreting profession, and of the Interpreter Training Program process and structure. Skills in using Microsoft Office (ex. Word, Access, Outlook and Excel). Skills in the use of standard office equipment and software. Skills in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software. Skills in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail and skills in using educational technology, e.g. Blackboard or related LMS. Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to communicate effectively in both English and American Sign Language. Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with college faculty, staff, students, and the general public. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Work Schedule

Depending on the semester, the work schedule will vary- the majority of hours will be daytime. One evening a week is possible; position will work approximately 8 hours per week.
