Southeastern Virginia Training Center is an Intermediate Care Facility which provides highly structured habilitation services including life in a residential neighborhood, care support/training, and learning opportunities in areas such as employment, communication, language, self-care, independent living, socialization, recreation, leisure, music, academic skills and motor development for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All applications for admission are made through the community service board (CSB) in the locality where the applicant currently resides. Applications are considered by Health Planning Regional Admission and Discharge Committees based on the applicant’s home location. Discharge planning begins upon admission and is integral to our community integration initiative. SEVTC supports individuals from across the state of Virginia who have intellectual and developmental disabilities including those with behaviorally complex needs.

SEVTC provides a full range of residential and professional services. Individuals live in fifteen five-bedroom homes in the Steppingstones at Greenbrier neighborhood. The homes have fully equipped kitchens, living and dining rooms with open floor plan, family rooms, activity and learning spaces, single bedrooms, and specially equipped bathrooms. The homes were designed and constructed in 2012 with universal design principles in mind and meet the latest in residential LEED standards for energy efficiency. Each person has a personal support team (PST) including professional and direct support personnel as determined by individual interests, needs, and preferences and as reflected in their support plan. The individual, authorized representative, family, community case manager, and other members of the team work together to complete comprehensive and specialized assessments; to develop a person-centered plan; to set priorities for daily activities, basic care, and on-going learning; to implement and monitor plans and experiences; and, to support a chosen lifestyle. In addition, the personal support team identifies essential supports necessary for the individual to successfully integrate into a community of their choice and works with DBHDS and CSB partners to facilitate a smooth transition to community living.
