Internship January 2018 - April 2018 

  • In compliance with University requirements, National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification and the facility of Westminster-Canterbury, the intern will be involved in key functions of the Therapeutic Recreation Department of Enhanced Services and/or other TR departments throughout the community. Daily functions include:

    Research, planning, implementation/leading, and evaluation of leisure interventions. –Implementing 1:1 and group interventions
  • Assist in assessment of residents’ needs and development of individual activity plan/goals to be included in overall plan of care.
  • Document participation or regression consistent with regulatory compliance.
  • Provides feedback to care plan team regarding interactions with residents.
  • Assist with transporting residents in wheelchairs and geri-chairs, assist residents who walk with walkers or require supervision and/or direction.
  • Assists in setting up for activities, re-arranging furniture, and clean up after events.
  • Develop skills necessary to operate computer programs to complete specific tasks related to the Therapeutic Recreation Department.
  • Develop skills for effective communication, both verbal and written for documentation, goals/approaches, 
  • Will have opportunities to work with the rehab department to include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
  • Will have opportunity to work with the other therapeutic recreation department to include implementing leisure interventions, documentation and review  
    of regulations from department of social services per ALC/or state and federal regulations for HCC.
  • Opportunities to train and work with various departments through our continuum of care in the Westminster-Canterbury community, including but   
    not limited to fitness/aquatics, programs, social services, home health and marketing.
  • Requires teaming orientation and skills in performing job duties. Participates in intra- and inter-departmental teams.
  • Assists with special projects.
  • Interacts with residents in a manner compliant with their rights at all times.
  • Learn about and research various ailments/disabilities common in the geriatric population and develop knowledge of how they can affect leisure.

This is an unpaid internship of limited duration as set forth to meet the college/university degree requirements.

Must be enrolled in a college or university degree program for which student will earn credits to their degree in Therapeutic Recreation or similar degree.

Skills Desired: 

  • Experience working in a team.
    Experience working with the geriatric population and/or educational knowledge of appropriate recreational interventions pertaining to the specific 
  • Basic knowledge of other disciplines that work alongside TR in a healthcare environment
  • Basic knowledge of computer use and use of publishing programs such as: Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Individual must be physically able to assist residents in wheelchairs, or who use walkers or require direction. This position requires the individual to be  
    able to set up for activities and move and re-arrange furniture as necessary. Individual should be able to climb stairs between the floors in health care 
    and/or those in assisted living areas.
  • Have communication skills or desire to improve skills to assist with redirection and/or reorientation of residents. 


  • Assists in the publication of the monthly newsletter for distribution to The Hoy Center residents and families
  • Researching and developing of programs, to meet the group, as well as, individual needs of residents
  • Leads and directs activities for Enhanced Services residents.
  • Trains and schedules them to assist with the recreation program utilizing their expertise, skills and interests
  • Operates computer and demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively; verbally and in writing to complete specific tasks related to the Therapeutic Rec Dept
  • Position requires teaming skills in performing job duties
  • Participates in intra- and inter-departmental teams, as assigned
  • Interacts with residents in a manner compliant with their rights at all times
  • Coordinates special projects to address the needs of residents





Pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in a Therapeutic Recreation or sociology-related field preferred

  • Experience in recreation programs, social services, and working with seniors in long term or health care settings
  • Willing to grow professionally in this position through continuing education and training
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, Publisher, and Excel
  • Desire and ability to work with the aging population in an effort to maintain the highest quality of life
  • Must be able to help residents in wheelchairs and geri-chairs or those who use walkers and require direction
  • Must be able to help residents getting on and off a van or bus
  • Must be able to set up for activities and move and re-arrange furniture as necessary
  • Must be able to climb stairs between the floors in the facility
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Upbeat and engaging
